Today, the City of Punta Gorda celebrated its 23nd Annual Arbor Day Celebration hosting over 220 first grade students and 12 teachers from two local elementary schools. The students enjoyed activities along the “Knowledge Trail” including planting 7 new Mahogany Trees in Laishley Park. Many thanks to the Florida Forest Service (event sponsor), Punta Gorda Garden Club, Punta Gorda City Council, Punta Gorda Public Works Department, Punta Gorda Utilities Department, Punta Gorda Fire Department, Punta Gorda Police Department and the Punta Gorda Urban Design Division for all of their help in making this Arbor Day Event a TREE-iffic success!

With the lack of funding available to celebrate Arbor Day, how should the City proceed in their Annual Arbor Day Celebration?

Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) allows property owners to use their equity to pay for energy efficiency, renewable energy and wind resistance home improvements and pay these costs back as a non-ad valorem assessment on the property tax bill for up to 25 years. Florida PACE has helped many homeowners’ complete needed home improvements and see utility savings, can assist in stabilization of the local tax base, and allows contractors to grow their business. In October 2016, Charlotte County approved three companies to manage the PACE program in unincorporated areas of the County. The City has been approached by two of the three financing companies who are approved by the County to manage the PACE program to adopt similar legislation for the City. To learn more about how the Florida PACE Funding Agency works view: https://www.floridapace.gov/how-it-works. Do you think the City Council should approve the PACE program for use by property owners in the City of Punta Gorda?
