Nassau County lies at the northeastern corner of the state of Florida, just north of Jacksonville. It is bordered by the state of Georgia on the north and west across the St. Marys River, and by the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Established in 1824, it was named for the Duchy of Nassau, in what is now Germany. Most of the area is covered by sandy soil with poor drainage, marshes, or wetlands. Nassau County includes Amelia Island, the easternmost point and the only inhabited island in the county. The population was 73,314 as of 2010, mostly concentrated near the coast. The total area is 726 square miles.

The county seat is Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. At various times, the island has been claimed by France, Spain, Great Britain, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Fernandina was established in 1811 and named for King Ferdinand VII of Spain. The tourism industry, centered around Amelia Island, its resorts, and the many area golf courses, drives the local economy.

Although the county seat and historic courthouse still remain in Fernandina Beach, most of the government offices have moved to Yulee. Located on the mainland, it is the largest community in the county, and a suburb of Jacksonville. Yulee is home to Florida State College at Jacksonville.

The Nassau County Jail and Detention Center is administered by the Sheriff’s Office. It is located at 76212 Nicholas Cutinha Road, Yulee, Florida 32097. The facility can house a maximum of 250 adult and juvenile male and female inmates. Inmates may receive only postcards by mail. Video visitation is allowed, but must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. This may be done through the website, in person at the receptionist’s desk, or by phone at 904-548-4002, or toll-free at 855-725-2631. To check on an individual inmate’s booking status or bail information, call 904-548-4006. Use the website to find a Florida inmate in this jail.
