Calhoun County lies in the panhandle region of northwest Florida, west of Tallahassee, the state capital. Its eastern border is formed by the Apalachicola River. Created in 1838, it was named for John C. Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the U.S. The population in 2010 was 14,625, and the total area is 574 square miles. The majority of residents are white (80%), with about 16% identifying themselves as black.

The county seat and only city is Blountstown, named in honor of John Blount, a Seminole Indian chief who aided General Andrew Jackson when he invaded Spanish Florida in 1818. Calhoun County is a largely rural area, dependent upon agriculture. Other than Blountstown and the town of Altha, the rest of the county remains unincorporated. Early in the area’s history, the major crop was cotton. After the Civil War, the emphasis shifted to timber production. Other common crops today are tomatoes, watermelons, vegetables, and peanuts.

The Calhoun County Jail is located at 20776 Central Avenue East in Blountstown. This small facility generally houses 60 to 70 inmates, both male and female. It is run by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department. Inmates are allowed to receive mail, phone calls, and visitors, with certain restrictions. To inquire about visiting a prisoner, call 850-674-5049.

The state-run Calhoun Correctional Institution can be found at 19562 Institution Dr., Blountstown, Florida 32424. Established in 1988, the facility houses up to 1,354 male inmates in areas ranging from close custody to medium or minimum security to work release. The site, which is south of the county seat, includes Calhoun Work Camp. For information on inmates, visitation rules and regulations, and scheduling, visit the Florida Department of Corrections online or call 850-237-6500.

Inmates at the Institution are offered many academic and betterment programs, including GED, wellness, and anger management courses. The facility is also known for its vocational programs, including graphic arts, web design, and printing.
