Calhoun County lies in the panhandle region of northwest Florida, west of Tallahassee, the state capital. Its eastern border is formed by the Apalachicola River. Created in 1838, it was named for John C. Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the U.S. The population in 2010 was 14,625, and the total area is 574 square miles. The majority of residents are white (80%), with about 16% identifying themselves as black.
The county seat and only city is Blountstown, named in honor of John Blount, a Seminole Indian chief who aided General Andrew Jackson when he invaded Spanish Florida in 1818. Calhoun County is a largely rural area, dependent upon agriculture. Other than Blountstown and the town of Altha, the rest of the county remains unincorporated. Early in the area’s history, the major crop was cotton. After the Civil War, the emphasis shifted to timber production. Other common crops today are tomatoes, watermelons, vegetables, and peanuts.
