Located south of Jacksonville, Clay County lies in northeastern Florida. It was created from a part of Duval County in 1858 and named for Henry Clay, a U.S Senator from Kentucky and U.S. Secretary of State in the 1800s. The county covers a total of 644 square miles. Most of the 190,895 residents live in the northeastern part of the county, in large suburban communities closer to Jacksonville. Much of the remainder of the county is still very rural, covered with farms and reached by lesser maintained county roads.

During the late 19th century, the area was a popular tourist destination for travelers from the north. It offered therapeutic, warm mineral springs along with the mild climate found in all of northern Florida. At the height of the tourism period, the county seat, Green Cove Springs, on the St. Johns River in east central Clay County, had more than twelve hotels. After the Florida East Coast Railway was extended south to Palm Beach and Miami, tourism declined in the area. The county saw growth again during World War II, when the Florida National Guard developed Camp Blanding in the southwest portion of the county and Lee Field was opened as a flight training center on the outskirts of Green Cove Springs.

The Clay County Detention Facility, administered by the Detention Bureau of the Sheriff’s Office, can house 480 male and female inmates. Prisoners can receive mail addressed to them at P.O. Box 958, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043. The physical address is 901 North Orange Avenue.

Only persons listed on an inmate’s visitor list may be admitted for a visit. It is the responsibility of the inmate to notify eligible visitors of days and times when they will be allowed to enter the jail. The visitor list has a limit of four names. A schedule of visitation times is given on the website; each wing of the center has different days when visitors are allowed. To make inquiries about visits and other communication with inmates, along with jail regulations, you may call the jail directly at 904-529-5905.

Although I have never needed them for me, I have used them and they are spot on. Just a phone call gets them moving to get the bond posted. Better than awsome!

Deputy Gadt of our Traffic Unit had an awesome time meeting these young people and getting to answer their questions. He said they were intrigued with law-enforcement and he was ecstatic to spend time with them. #CCSOFL
