Located on the southeast coast of Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico, Collier County was created in 1923 from part of Lee County. It was named for Barron Collier, an advertising agent and land developer who moved to the area from New York City. The honor was bestowed in exchange for Collier paying for a large portion of the Tamiami Trail, the southernmost section of U.S. Highway 41, which runs from Tampa to Miami, across the Everglades. The county has a total area of 2,305 square miles, of which over 13% is water. It is the largest county in the state by land area.

Collier County had a population of 321,520 as of the 2010 census, showing a growth of almost 28% in the 10 years since the previous census. Approximately 66% of the population is non-Hispanic whites, with about 7% African Americans and 26% Hispanic or Latino. In 1962, the county seat was moved from tiny Everglades City in the southwest to East Naples in the northwest.

Tourism is a large and growing industry in the county. In addition to the recreational opportunities along the coast, Collier County is home to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, and parts of both Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Department oversees two jail facilities, one at Naples and a smaller detention center at Immokalee. The mailing address for both facilities is 3347 Tamiami Trail E, Naples, FL 34112. Both jails offer video visitation. To inquire about inmates in either facility, call 239-252-9504. The visitor center in Naples is located at 3311 Tamiami Trail E. The physical address of the visitor center in Immokalee is 302 Stockade Road. The Naples facility has 1206 beds, and Immokalee has 248 beds. The website has details about visitation schedules, regulations, and other details about inmates’ rights, programs, and the facilities.

Gulf Coast H.S. Student Taken Into Protective Custody After Alarming Comments

Post Date:02/22/2018 11:35 AM

A Gulf Coast High School student was taken into protective custody Wednesday after making disturbing statements that caused others to be concerned for his wellbeing.

When deputies responded to the student’s residence they found nothing dangerous.

The student was detained and taken into custody under the provisions of Florida’s Baker Act, based on behavioral criteria that indicate that the person could pose a danger to themselves. Florida law prohibits the release of the names and other identifying information of persons detained under the Baker Act. The student will receive mental health treatment and has been removed from school pending the outcome of the investigation.

This is not related to the investigation involving a social media post that referenced the potential for violence at Gulf Coast High School or Palmetto Ridge High School on Wednesday. That investigation is ongoing.

Barron Collier Student Arrested Following Threatening E-mail

Post Date:02/22/2018 10:50 AM

Collier County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested a Barron Collier High School student early Thursday after an investigation determined that she sent a threatening e-mail to a teacher.

The student is charged with written threats to kill or do bodily injury, which is a felony.

Detectives say that on Feb.18 she used another student’s e-mail account to send an e-mail that said, “Shooting you and the school Tuesday” to a teacher.

Britney Brown, 16, 106th Ave. N., is charged with written threats to kill or do bodily injury, which is a felony.

Detectives determined that the student associated with the e-mail address did not author it.

Using internet analytics, Collier County Public Schools assisted detectives in determining that the e-mail was sent from Britney’s cell phone. The investigation established that the other student had provided his log-in information to her earlier in the school year.

The name and address of a juvenile arrested on felony charges is public record in Florida.

It is important to report suspicious or unusual activity to law enforcement. Anyone wishing to report suspicious activity can call the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 239-252-9300, or to remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-8477.
