DeSoto County is located in south central Florida, east of Sarasota. Agriculture makes up a large part of the county’s economy. Major crops include beef, tomatoes, sugarcane, citrus fruits, and cucumbers. The county was formed in 1887 from Manatee County and named for Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto. In 2010, the population was 34,862. The total area of the county is 639 square miles, and the county seat is Arcadia. During World War I and again during World War II, the county was home to Carlstrom Field Air Base, a training center for both American and British pilots. Another training facility, Dorr Field, also operated near Arcadia, and later became the site of DeSoto Correctional Institution and Annex.

The DeSoto County Jail, administered by the Corrections Bureau of the County Sheriff’s Office, is located at 208 East Cypress St., Arcadia, FL 34265. Visitors are allowed via video, and prisoners may receive mail at the facility. The medium security jail houses both male and female inmates in 180 beds. To inquire about a prisoner or ask questions about issues not addressed on the website, call 863-993-4710.

Also in DeSoto County, the state runs the DeSoto Annex Correctional Institution, located at 13617 SE Hwy. 70, Arcadia, Florida 34266. Established in 1996 to house 941 male inmates, as of 2015 the facility had a capacity of 1,453, having received all inmates from DeSoto Correctional Institution which is undergoing renovation. To inquire about visiting an inmate, call the Annex at 863-494-3727. Also under the supervision of DeSoto Annex are the Arcadia Road Prison and DeSoto Work Camp, which accommodate minimum to medium security male inmates who participate on work crews in the community.
