Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval County in northeast Florida on the Atlantic Coast. The city and county consolidated their governments in 1968. With a population of 821,784 in 2010, Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida. By area, it is the largest city in the 48 contiguous United States. It covers over 874 square miles, all but about 43 square miles of Duval County. Founded in 1791, the city is named for President Andrew Jackson. It is home to Florida’s third largest seaport, as well as two US Navy bases.

The Duval County Clerk of the Circuit Court is the official recorder of all instruments that are required by law to be recorded. The law requires the clerk to record all instruments/documents in one general series of books called the “Official Records.” As a result, the clerk keeps a register in which are entered the kind of instrument, the names of the parties to the instrument, the filing number of the instrument, and the date and time of filing.

As the county recorder, the Clerk maintains a variety of instruments as official documents. Instruments/documents recorded by the clerk include but are not limited to certificates of discharge from military service, judgments, claims of lien, satisfactions, deeds, leases, bills of sale, agreements, mortgages and any other instrument required or authorized by law to be recorded.

Public records in the county can be accessed online by doing a background check or by visiting the clerk’s office in person. To do a public records search online, you will have to visit the Duval County Clerk Website. The website has easy to follows steps and links that will direct you to the records that are available online. In addition, the website has the fee schedule applicable when obtaining public records.

For records that cannot be obtained through the county website, you will have to visit the clerk’s office in person. While visiting the clerk’s office, you will be required to submit a records request form with the details of the records you are requesting. Alternatively, you can call the clerk’s office at (904) 255-2000. Though you cannot obtain copies of public records by phone, it is a sure way to get information regarding public records in the county.
