Flagler County lies along the Atlantic Ocean on Florida’s east coast between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. It was created in 1917 from parts of Saint Johns and Volusia Counties. It is the namesake of Henry Morrison Flagler, one of the founders of Standard Oil. Flagler, who first visited Florida in the 1870s with his ill wife, was inspired to develop resorts and hotels along the coast from St. Augustine to Miami. He is known as the father of both Palm Beach and Miami. In order to easily bring materials and visitors to his developments, he built the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC), which reached south to Biscayne Bay. Between 1905 and 1912, he built and extension to the FEC, the Florida Overseas Railroad, which reached Key West. Although heavily damaged by a hurricane in 1935, many of the bridges and infrastructure of the Overseas Railroad were given to the state for use in building the Overseas Highway to Key West.
The population of Flagler County was 95,696 as of the 2010 census. It covers an area of 571 square miles, with 15% of the area covered by water. The county seat is Bunnell, which was named after an early resident, Alvah Bunnell, a shingle maker who supplied much wood for the building of the FEC Railway. The city lies near the center of the county, west of Interstate 95.
The County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the Flagler County Detention Facility.
