Located in the Florida Panhandle, Gadsden County is west of Tallahassee and is bordered by the state of Georgia to the north. It is the only county in Florida where the majority of the population is African American, with 56% of the population of 46,389 in 2010 identifying themselves a such. Created in 1823, the county was named for James Gadsden, a soldier from South Carolina who served as an aide to General Andrew Jackson during the Seminole Wars in Florida in the 1820s. The county has a total area of 529 square miles.
The county seat is Quincy, located in the center of the county. Once heavily dependent upon farming for its economic base, Quincy–as well as the rest of Gadsden County–was focused on the production of tobacco, tomatoes, mushrooms, soybeans, and eggs. The production of tobacco ceased in 1977, faced with lessening demand. The mushroom factory closed in 2008, at about the same time that the county saw massive layoffs on its tomato farms. In the past several years, the county has been focused on businesses to boost the economy.
