Gulf County is located in the Florida Panhandle, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, from which the county takes its name. Created in 1925, the first county seat was Wewahitchka in the northwestern part of the county, but in 1965 it was moved to Port St. Joe, the site of Florida’s first Constitutional Convention in 1838, which lies on the Gulf. The county is bordered on the east by the Apalachicola River. Over 25% of the county’s total area of 756 square miles is covered by water. As of 2014, the estimated population was 15,944.
In addition to being a shipping center and popular fishing destination, Gulf County is known for its production of tupelo honey. Beekeepers time their honey harvests to be sure the product is made only from the bloom of the native tupelo tree. Beehives, or bee boxes, are placed on platforms or rafts in the swamps along the Apalachicola River to keep them above the changing water level.
