Lake County is located in central Florida, north and west of Orlando. Its northeastern border is formed by the St. Johns River. Created in 1887 from parts of Sumter and Orange counties, it was named for its lakes: there are more than 1,400 in the county’s 1,157 square miles, of which almost 19% is covered by water. The population, as of the 2010 census, was 297,052. The county is home to Sugarloaf Mountain, the highest point in the Florida Peninsula at 312 feet above sea level. It is the fifth highest point in the state, with the other four all located in the Panhandle. Historically, the county relied largely on agriculture, but now it is nearly all urban.

Although Clermont is the county’s largest city, the county seat is Tavares, which lies near the center of the county on Lake Dora. The city was founded in 1880 by newspaper and railroad man Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, who named it for a Portuguese ancestor. His dream was to make Tavares the capital of Florida, but Tallahassee was chosen instead.

The Lake County Detention Center is administered by the Sheriff’s Office. The 960-bed facility is located at 551 West Main Street, Tavares, Florida 32778. It houses both male and female adult and juvenile inmates. Extensive information about visitation, regulations, mail, and other inmate concerns is provided on the website. To call the Center, dial 352-742-4000.

Lake Correctional Institution is a state-run close, medium, minimum, and work release prison located at 19225 U.S. Highway 27, Clermont, Florida 34715. It has housed adult male inmates since 1973 in its 1,093-bed complex. Originally, it was constructed as a migrant labor camp for the citrus, grape, and vegetable industry. Vocational programs include water treatment technologies and cabinetmaking. To get more information about the Institution, visit the Florida Department of Corrections website or call the facility at 352-394-6146.

Family-friendly, excellent service. I could not have asked for better, easier, bondsman services. Chris took the time to explain a number of things to me clearly, and then acted on my family's behalf.

Instead of grabbing a camera, grab a trauma kit. The Department of Homeland Security, American College of Surgeons, and the Hartford Consensus have developed a life sustaining program to teach basic bleeding cessation techniques to anyone, much like CPR. The class consists of classroom style training and hands-on experiences with simulators. Our instructors are ready and willing to set up a training for your community, church, school, or place of business. Contact Community Services today and an instructor will reach out to you.

RUMORS OF SCHOOL THREATS IN LAKE COUNTY

In light of the unspeakable tragedy that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida on Wednesday, the Sheriff’s Office will continue to have an increased presence at schools throughout the coming week in an effort to relieve anxieties and give parents, students, and school faculty some much needed peace of mind.

We are aware of rumors circulating on social media that indicate there could be threats to schools in Lake County. Please know that these are rumors; there have been no actual threats specific to any Lake County schools thus far.

We would also like to remind parents to speak to their children and caution them regarding their conversations, especially the comments they post on social media. These are serious situations and children need to understand that the comments they make can carry very serious consequences. The Sheriff’s Office maintains a zero tolerance for any remarks that could be considered threatening or disruptive and swift action will be taken when such comments are made.

Parents or students can utilize the Speak-Out hotline to report anything that is of concern; the number is 1-800-423-TIPS. They can also call the Sheriff’s Office at 352-343-2101.
