Monroe County includes the southwest tip of the Florida Peninsula, as well as the Florida Keys, the chain of islands extending to the southwest off the southern coast. The county covers a total area of 3,738 square miles; however, only about 26% of that is land area, due to the many islands included in the county. In spite of the fact that over four-fifths of the county’s land area is on the mainland, nearly all of the 73,090 residents live on the Keys, since the mainland is covered by the Everglades and largely uninhabited. Monroe County was established in 1893 and named for the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. The county seat is Key West, at the extreme southwest point of the county, the southernmost city in the continental United States. The economy is largely based on tourism.

Because of the distance covered by the populated part of the county, 112 miles from Key West to Cross Key at the northeastern end of the archipelago, the Sheriff’s Office is divided into three divisions: Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys. The Bureau of Corrections maintains a jail facility in each area. Use the website to find a Florida inmate in this county.

The Lower Keys division is served by the Key West Jail, the largest facility, which houses up to 596 male and female adult and juvenile inmates. Located at 5501 College Road, Key West, Florida 33040, visitation is allowed, according to the schedule posted on the website. No advance scheduling is needed; a visitor may simply sign in at the reception desk. To inquire about jail regulations or a specific inmate, call 305-293-7300.

The Middle Keys facility is the Key Vaca Jail, located at 3981 Ocean Terrace, Marathon, Florida 33050. This facility can house up to 52 inmates and offers visitation times most afternoons and evenings. For more information, check the website or call the jail at 305-289-2420.

The Plantation Key Jail, a 47-bed facility, serves the Upper Keys. It is located at 53 Highpoint Road, Tavernier, Florida 33070. Like the jail in Marathon, this facility has visitation hours most afternoons and evenings. To inquire about an inmate or jail regulations, call 305-853-3266.

Timothy Allen Smith, who was listed as homeless, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest with violence and resisting arrest without violence.

Deputies Shannon O’Connell and Jenna Moeller went to the 5500 block of MacDonald Avenue at 1:30 p.m. in reference to a suspicious person. When Deputy O’Connell attempted to detain him, he pulled away and ran down 3rd Street. He tripped, fell into a puddle, got up and began running again. He was ordered to stop to multiple times. Smith then ran into the street and threw himself into the driver’s side window of a vehicle traveling north on 3rd Street. That driver and another motorist stopped and provided witness statements. Smith again pulled away from deputies before he was finally taken into custody a short time later.

Deputy O’Connell suffered minor cuts and injuries. Smith was first taken to Lower Keys Medical Center after requesting medical attention.
