Pasco County is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast just north of Tampa. It was founded in 1887, and includes retirement communities and suburbs of Tampa. There are a number of commercial fishing companies along the coast. The population was 464,697, as of the 2010 census. The total area of the county is 868 square miles, with 14% covered by water. The county was named for Samuel Pasco, a U.S. Senator from Florida in the 1880s.

The largest city is New Port Richey in the southwest near the Gulf, but the county seat is Dade City in the northeast. Dade City is located near the site of Fort Dade, which existed in the 1870s and 1880s. During World War II, a German prisoner of war camp was situated there. After the war, the site became a park and civic center.

The Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the Land O’ Lakes Detention Facilities. The complex, which opened in 1991, was expanded in 2009 to hold a maximum of 1,432 adult and juvenile male and female inmates. Located at 20101 Central Boulevard, Land O’ Lakes, Florida 34654, the facility offers vocational training in hydroponics, sewing, welding, swine, janitorial services, and grounds maintenance. To obtain information on visitation rules, jail regulations, or a specific inmate, visit the website or call the facility at 813-996-6982.

The state-run Zephyrhills Correctional Institution is also located in Pasco County. Since 1999, it has housed adult male inmates who need mental health care. As many as 758 inmates can be housed in the facility, which has special accommodations for elderly inmates. Educational programs include adult basic education, GED, literacy, a bachelor’s degree in Biblical studies, and a master of theology degree program. The Institution is located at 2739 Gall Boulevard, Zephyrhills, Florida 33541. To get more information or inquire about the visitation schedule, call 813-782-5521.
