Sarasota County is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast in southern Florida, south of Tampa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 379,448. The county covers a total area of 725 square miles, of which over 23% is water. The county was created from a portion of Manatee County in 1921. No one knows the origin of the name “Sarasota”, but it has been associated with the area from the beginning of area exploration by Europeans.

The county seat is also Sarasota, which is found in the northwest corner of the county along the coast. The largest city is North Port, at the far southeastern corner of the county. Tourism is an important part of the economy. Many wealthy families have winter homes in the area. The Baltimore Orioles, a major league baseball team, conduct spring training in Sarasota. The Ringling Brothers Circus used Sarasota, and later Venice, as its winter home for many years. The famous Clown College was started in Venice and later operated in Sarasota until it closed in 1997.  The area still has a strong circus tradition in parts of its culture.

The Corrections Division of the Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the Sarasota County Jail. The jail is located at 2020 Main Street, Sarasota, Florida 34237. Mail for an inmate should be addressed to PO Box 49588, Sarasota, Florida 34230, including the inmate’s name and cell block number. If you do not know the cell block, you may call the jail at 941-861-4601 (Booking) or 941-861-4165 (Front Desk) and someone can help you. The facility can house 1040 male and female adult and juvenile detainees.

Video visitation is allowed. Details about the schedule are included on the website. Visits may be scheduled online from two weeks to 24 hours before the desired visitation time. For those without Internet access, a kiosk is available in the jail lobby for use in scheduling. For assistance with scheduling a visit, contact 941-861-4692.

Remember the sexual predator we featured just a few hours ago as part of our #FugitiveFriday campaign? Well, you guessed it. We already have him in handcuffs. Thanks to the OUTSTANDING work our Fugitive Apprehension Unit working in partnership with the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, William Huff, was arrested just after 12:00 this afternoon, in south St. Petersburg. Hate to break it to you, Will, but if you were trying to hide, the orange vest didn't help your cause. WAY TO GO, TEAM! #OneForTheGoodGuys

So, we thought about issuing a news release about Memorial Day boating safety and then we realized, there's not a CHANCE any of us will be hitting the water this weekend. It's unfortunate but that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy #MemorialDayWeekend safely and responsibly. If you're still planning to go out and about, make sure your vehicle is in good working order; remember to use low-beam headlights, maintain a safe distance between vehicles and the LAST thing you want to do is drive distracted. If you plan to celebrate, do so responsibly by securing a cab or ride-sharing service BEFORE you leave the house. It will both save you money and save us paperwork! Be smart, have fun, and remember what Memorial Day is really about.
