St. Johns County lies on the Atlantic Coast in northern Florida, just south of Jacksonville. It’s western border is formed by the St. Johns River, from which the county takes its name. One of the two original counties established after the United States gained control of Florida, it was founded in 1821. At that time, the county covered the entire Florida Peninsula. The modern boundaries leave the county a total area of 822 square miles, of which nearly 27% is covered by water. As of the 2010 census, the population was 190,039, with rapid growth occurring. Most of the county is covered by residential bedroom communities.

The county seat, St. Augustine, is the center of the county’s chief economic industry, tourism. The city is famous as the oldest continuously occupied settlement established by Europeans in the continental United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral and Spanish Florida’s first governor, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, it served as the capital for over 200 years, as well as remaining the capital of the Florida Territory until 1824, when the new capital was established at Tallahassee. Many thousands of visitors come annually to see the historic structures remaining from the Spanish settlement days, including the Castillo San Marcos, a fort constructed in the late 1600s.

The St. Johns County Jail is under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. Since 1952, the Main Detention Unit has been located at 3955 Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine, Florida 32095. This facility houses up to 664 male and female adult and juvenile inmates, with sections of minimum, medium, and maximum security. The county also has a 100-bed Work Release Center, for inmates who have been approved to work in the community. To inquire about a specific inmate, call the Sheriff’s Office at 904-824-8304.

The Video Visitation Center for all St. Johns County inmates is found at 2463 US 1 South in St. Augustine. To schedule a visit, call 904-209-2222 at least one day in advance. Appointments are available on Monday through Thursday. See the website or call the facility to get more information.

The St Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the St Johns County School Board has been made aware of a threat that started making rounds on Facebook last night referencing an attack on a school with the initials “SHS” with fear that it was a threat to a school in our county.

After investigating the situation and the threat, it was learned that the school identified as SHS was Springfield High School in Springfield, Ohio. The Sayre Burough Police Department and Sulphur Police Department were already informed of the Facebook post mentioning the threat and have been investigating it. They were able to confirm that the original posts were coming from Springfield, Ohio.

We currently have Youth Resource Deputies monitoring all of the schools in our county and there is NO SUBSTANTIATED OR CREDIBLE THREAT to St. Augustine High School or any other school in St. Johns County. Students in our schools are in class and are safe, and it is safe for you to bring your children to school.

Thank you to those who have brought this to our attention. SJSO takes each and every threat against our city and our schools seriously.

REMEMBER: If you see something suspicious, call or text 911.

The Marine Unit along with partner marine agencies in the county have been getting numerous calls off the beach north of the St Augustine pier about vessels sinking.

These are dredge piping buoys and can be mistaken as a vessel sinking. The buoys are mostly white and have a second round orange buoy attached that can be mistaken as a person in a life jacket. Photos are attached so you can see what the buoys look like from shore. They have been placed offshore during dredge operations.

If you believe there is still a maritime emergency please don’t hesitate to call 911 and we will respond to check.
