St. Johns County lies on the Atlantic Coast in northern Florida, just south of Jacksonville. It’s western border is formed by the St. Johns River, from which the county takes its name. One of the two original counties established after the United States gained control of Florida, it was founded in 1821. At that time, the county covered the entire Florida Peninsula. The modern boundaries leave the county a total area of 822 square miles, of which nearly 27% is covered by water. As of the 2010 census, the population was 190,039, with rapid growth occurring. Most of the county is covered by residential bedroom communities.

The county seat, St. Augustine, is the center of the county’s chief economic industry, tourism. The city is famous as the oldest continuously occupied settlement established by Europeans in the continental United States. Founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral and Spanish Florida’s first governor, Pedro Menendez de Aviles, it served as the capital for over 200 years, as well as remaining the capital of the Florida Territory until 1824, when the new capital was established at Tallahassee. Many thousands of visitors come annually to see the historic structures remaining from the Spanish settlement days, including the Castillo San Marcos, a fort constructed in the late 1600s.

The St. Johns County Jail is under the direction of the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. Since 1952, the Main Detention Unit has been located at 3955 Lewis Speedway, St. Augustine, Florida 32095. This facility houses up to 664 male and female adult and juvenile inmates, with sections of minimum, medium, and maximum security. The county also has a 100-bed Work Release Center, for inmates who have been approved to work in the community. To inquire about a specific inmate, call the Sheriff’s Office at 904-824-8304.

The Video Visitation Center for all St. Johns County inmates is found at 2463 US 1 South in St. Augustine. To schedule a visit, call 904-209-2222 at least one day in advance. Appointments are available on Monday through Thursday. See the website or call the facility to get more information.
