Charlotte County lies on Florida’s west coast, along the Gulf of Mexico. It is named for Charlotte Harbor, a natural estuary which is being threatened by rapid development and overuse of resources. Originally a part of Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, Charlotte County was created in 1921. Its county seat of Punta Gorda (Spanish for “Fat Point”) is the only incorporated city within the county and one of the oldest in the state. Hurricane Charley did significant damage to the area on August 13, 2004. Many historic buildings had to be restored, and there was a great deal of new construction, with buildings meeting hurricane resistant codes.

The population of Charlotte County nearly doubled in the 1980s due to rapid development of many retirement communities. The median age in the county in 2010 was 55.9 years, second only to Sumter County, Florida. The 2010 census reported a population of 159,978 residing in a total area of 858 square miles; however, less than 80% of that area is land.

The Charlotte County Jail, administered by the Sheriff’s Office, is located at 26601 Airport Road in Punta Gorda. Inmates are allowed video visitation under the jail regulations. Visits should be scheduled online via the link on the website. The visitation building’s hours are limited, but visits may be scheduled by phone at 941-833-6398 during open hours, which are generally afternoons on weekdays with extended hours on the weekend. Check the schedule online.

The jail, opened in 2001, can house 960 inmates and has areas for males and females. Inmates are offered many programs at the facility, including GED and parenting classes, substance abuse programs, counseling groups, and the opportunity to participate in hydroponics and aquaculture programs. To inquire about an inmate or rules regarding contact, call the Sheriff’s Office at 941-639-2101.

Charlotte Correctional Institution, a state-run facility, is also located in Charlotte County at 33123 Oil Well Road, Punta Gorda, Florida 33955. The Institution houses up to 1.291 male inmates in custody ranging from medium security to work release. To find or contact an inmate, visit the Florida Department of Corrections website, or call the facility at 941-833-8100

Please note, new road markings and stop signs have been erected on Quasar Blvd at the intersection of Beacon Drive. This intersection is now a four-way stop. The intersection is near Kingsway Elementary School and there is a lot of traffic in the mornings and afternoons. Please watch for children who will now be expecting you to stop!

Pop Quiz - You are checking out at Wal-Mart, and notice someone left their wallet on the register stand. What do you do? (Hint: one of these options is THEFT)
A.) Alert the cashier so the wallet can be returned to the owner.
B.) Take the wallet that doesn't belong to you and leave the store.

On 2/19, the woman pictured here at the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market chose WRONG, and now we need to find her. If you recognize her, please contact us and ask for DFC Noe.

In reply to the first 5 comments we'll get - we know the picture isn't great, we work with what we have, we know Google satellites take better photos, and no - the shopping cart was not fingerprinted. 🤣🕵️‍♂️🚔
