Charlotte County lies on Florida’s west coast, along the Gulf of Mexico. It is named for Charlotte Harbor, a natural estuary which is being threatened by rapid development and overuse of resources. Originally a part of Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, Charlotte County was created in 1921. Its county seat of Punta Gorda (Spanish for “Fat Point”) is the only incorporated city within the county and one of the oldest in the state. Hurricane Charley did significant damage to the area on August 13, 2004. Many historic buildings had to be restored, and there was a great deal of new construction, with buildings meeting hurricane resistant codes.

The population of Charlotte County nearly doubled in the 1980s due to rapid development of many retirement communities. The median age in the county in 2010 was 55.9 years, second only to Sumter County, Florida. The 2010 census reported a population of 159,978 residing in a total area of 858 square miles; however, less than 80% of that area is land.

The Charlotte County Jail, administered by the Sheriff’s Office, is located at 26601 Airport Road in Punta Gorda. Inmates are allowed video visitation under the jail regulations. Visits should be scheduled online via the link on the website. The visitation building’s hours are limited, but visits may be scheduled by phone at 941-833-6398 during open hours, which are generally afternoons on weekdays with extended hours on the weekend. Check the schedule online.

The jail, opened in 2001, can house 960 inmates and has areas for males and females. Inmates are offered many programs at the facility, including GED and parenting classes, substance abuse programs, counseling groups, and the opportunity to participate in hydroponics and aquaculture programs. To inquire about an inmate or rules regarding contact, call the Sheriff’s Office at 941-639-2101.

Charlotte Correctional Institution, a state-run facility, is also located in Charlotte County at 33123 Oil Well Road, Punta Gorda, Florida 33955. The Institution houses up to 1.291 male inmates in custody ranging from medium security to work release. To find or contact an inmate, visit the Florida Department of Corrections website, or call the facility at 941-833-8100

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Administrative and District Offices will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day. The offices will reopen on Tuesday, May 29, at 8:00am.

There will be no change in County Jail visitation hours. Urgent media requests during the holiday can be directed to the Watch Commander at 941-639-0013.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to enjoy the holiday safely. If you are drinking alcohol, that means choosing a Designated Driver, staying where you are celebrating, or arranging for another form of safe transportation. As a reminder, the AAA Tow to Go program is operating throughout the holiday weekend. If plans for a designated driver fail, this free ride home is available by calling 1-855-2-TOW-2-GO (1-855-286-9246).

Law Enforcement across our area will be out to ensure you drive sober this weekend, so designate a driver if you plan to be drinking. If you are impaired and do not have a driver, consider using AAA Tow-2-Go.

AAA and Budweiser partner up over the holiday weekend to provide this program that helps prevent impaired driving. It is a free, confidential ride to AAA members and non-members, with a AAA truck that transports the vehicle and driver home or somewhere safe within 10 miles.

It is always recommended to plan ahead and use a designated driver. If you find yourself in need of this program, you can call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO. The program starts Friday, May 25th and ends at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29th.
