Jacksonville is the county seat of Duval County in northeast Florida on the Atlantic Coast. The city and county consolidated their governments in 1968. With a population of 821,784 in 2010, Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida. By area, it is the largest city in the 48 contiguous United States. It covers over 874 square miles, all but about 43 square miles of Duval County. Founded in 1791, the city is named for President Andrew Jackson. It is home to Florida’s third largest seaport, as well as two US Navy bases. Tourism is extremely important to the local economy.

Since the merger of the city and county government, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has been responsible for law enforcement in Duval County. Its Department of Corrections supervises three correctional facilities in Jacksonville. The John E. Goode Pre-Trial Detention Facility is located downtown at 500 East Adams Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202. As well as pre-trial inmates, this jail houses federal, juvenile, state sentenced and county sentenced prisoners. The twelve-story facility was opened in 1991 with capacity of 2,189 inmates. The second facility is the James I. Montgomery Correctional Center, located at 4727 Lannie Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32218, north of downtown. This facility has three units. The North Unit houses up to 440 sentenced male inmates. The South Unit is a facility for up to 160 sentenced and unsentenced female inmates. The third unit is an annex that can house an additional 48 male prisoners. The visitation schedule here is also determined by the inmate’s last initial. The third facility operated by the Sheriff’s Department of Corrections is the Community Transition Center. Located downtown at 451 Catherine Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202, it houses county sentenced male and female inmates participating in work furlough and substance abuse treatment programs. The facility has 300 beds. Visitation is only allowed on weekends, according to the schedule found on the website.
