Reaching from the border of Alabama to the Gulf of Mexico, just east of Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle, lies Santa Rosa County. Created in 1842, it was named for the Roman Catholic saint, Rosa de Viterbo. The county has a total area of 1,174 square miles, with about 14% covered by water. As of the 2010 census, the population was 151,372. The county seat is Milton, situated in the central portion of the area.

The Santa Rosa Jail is operated by the Sheriff’s Office. The facility can house up to 698 male and female adult and juvenile inmates. Mail may be addressed to a prisoner at PO Box 7129, Milton, Florida 32572. Visits are allowed by way of video. This can be from home, or visitors may use the units in the jail lobby at 5755 E. Milton Road, Milton, Florida 32583. Free visitation is available in the lobby from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Visitors using the lobby video units between 5:01 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday through Sunday will be required to pay a fee. Before making a visit, it is advisable to call the Inmate Information Line at 850-564-6369 to be certain the inmate you wish to visit will be available.

The Santa Rosa Correctional Institution is a state-run prison located at 5850 E. Milton Road, Milton, Florida 32583, not very far from the county jail. This facility, opened in 1996, houses up to 1,614 adult male inmates in close, medium, minimum, and work release custody. At the same location, the Santa Rosa Annex is a 1,478-bed facility for adult males also run by the Florida Department of Corrections. It was established in 2006, and offers Commercial Drivers License (CDL) training. The phone number is 850-981-7602.

The Blackwater River Correctional Facility contracts with the Florida Department of Corrections to provides services and housing for a maximum of 2,00 adult male inmates. It is located at 5914 Jeff Ates Road, Milton, Florida 32583. For more information, call 850-983-4100.

Very unprofessional. Didn't allow me to explain my situation and hung up on me when I needed her help. There are very few bondsman in this area and they know it.

School Arrest

On 2/21/18 at approximately 11:48 am, a School Resource Officer with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was on duty at Milton High School when he was informed of an incident involving a juvenile student.

A student knocked on a classroom door and yelled “School Shooter” three times. The teacher opened the door to find the student standing in the hallway, laughing. The student was immediately taken to the School Resource Officer and the Dean.

There were 13 witnesses to the incident. The juvenile student was immediately taken into custody and arrested. The student was then transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail where he was booked and processed. The student was charged with the violation of the following Florida State Statute:

· (1 Count ) Disturbing the Peace-School Function- Second Degree Misdemeanor - FSS-871.01.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Rosa County School Board has a Zero Tolerance Policy related to these types of incidents

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office takes all threats to educational facilities seriously. We will investigate them and follow up on all leads and tips. Anyone charged with this crime can face a second degree felony for intimidation/write or send a threat to kill or injure, and one count of second degree misdemeanor for disturbing the peace/interfere with school/admin function.


Please report any activity to local law enforcement immediately. You can remain anonymous by contacting the Santa Rosa County Crime Stoppers Program at 437-STOP or their website SRCCS.COM . There is a reward of up to $3000 for an arrest.

Traffic Alert

Santa Rosa County:
• I-10 Widening from Escambia Bay Bridge to Avalon Boulevard (S.R. 281/Exit 22) Alternating lane closures on I-10, from the Escambia Bay Bridge to east of S.R. 281 (Avalon Boulevard/Exit 22), from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 through Friday, Feb. 23 as crews work to widen the roadway. In addition, alternating lane closures on Avalon Boulevard, near the I-10 interchange, will also be encountered as crews reconstruct the overpass.
• U.S. 90 at Jim’s Fish Camp- The westbound, outside lane will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 through Thursday, Feb. 22 as crews perform construction activities.
• U.S. 98 (S.R. 30) Pensacola Bay Bridge Replacement - Alternating lane closures on U.S. 98 east and westbound, between 14th Avenue in Pensacola and Bay Bridge Drive in Gulf Breeze, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 25 as crews perform construction activities.
• I-10 over Blackwater River Bridge Emergency Joint Repair- Westbound I-10 traffic will encounter lane restrictions over Blackwater River from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, and 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 as crews perform emergency repairs to an expansion joint
• S.R. 89North Medan Landscape Enhancement- Traffic may encounter intermittent and inside lane closures between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Monday, Feb. 19 through Friday, March 30 as crews perform landscaping in the medians.
• S.R. 87 Pipe Maintenance from Laredo Street to Nevada Street- Drivers can expect intermittent lane restrictions from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Wednesday, Feb. 28 as crews continue to seal and line existing pipes
• S.R. 87 Multilane from Eglin AFB boundary to Hickory Hammock Road – Traffic between County Road 184 (Hickory Hammock Road) and the Eglin AFB boundary is restricted to loads less than 11-feet wide. The restriction will be in place until the project is complete.
All activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather. Drivers are reminded to use caution, especially at night, when traveling through a work zone and to watch for construction workers and equipment entering and exiting the roadway.
