St. Lucie County is located on the Atlantic Ocean in southeast Florida, north of Palm Beach. Established in 1905 from the southern part of Brevard County, it is named for Saint Lucie of Syracuse, a Christian martyr of the early 4th century. The total area of the county is 688 square miles, with almost 17% covered by water. As of 2010, the population was 277,789. The county seat is Fort Pierce, named for the commander of a group of soldiers who established a fort in the area in 1837, during the Second Seminole War.
The Indian River Lagoon, flowing through the county seat, is the most biologically diverse estuary in the United States. It is home to over 4,000 animal and plant species. Other interesting attractions include the National Navy SEAL Museum, the spring training home of the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie, numerous area golf courses, and 21 miles of beach on North and South Hutchinson Island.
